Today is the 40th anniversary of the event that would eventually lead to the name of this blog, as well as become the first in a series of events that would lead my home town of Cleveland, OH to become a national joke. It was not actually the first time that the Cuyahoga river was aflame, but it would be the most memorable. The events of June 22, 1969 led Time magazine to describe it in these words, “No Visible Life. Some river! Chocolate-brown, oily, bubbling with subsurface gases, it oozes rather than flows.”
The river is actually much cleaner now, as is the whole waterfront of Northeast Ohio, proper use and development of that water front top actually make our city a place people want to come to, well that’s another story.
